Janpur Cow Vaccination
In 2023, the village of Janpur, like many other regions in India, has been part of a significant initiative to improve the health and productivity of its livestock through a comprehensive Vaccination program..
The National Animal Disease Control Programme (NADCP), launched by the Indian government in 2019, aims to control Foot & Mouth Disease (FMD) and Brucellosis by vaccinating 100% of cattle, buffalo, sheep, goat, and pig population1. The program has a total outlay of Rs.13,343.00 crore for five years (2019-20 to 2023-24).
FMD is a highly contagious viral disease that affects cloven-hoofed animals such as cattle, buffaloes, sheep, goats, and pigs. It leads to a reduction in milk yield, decreased growth rate, infertility, reduced working capacity in bullocks, and trade embargo in the international market1. Control of FMD can be achieved by mass vaccination of susceptible livestock repeatedly at regular intervals.
Brucellosis is a reproductive disease of cattle and buffaloes caused by the bacterium Brucella abortus. It induces abortion at the last stage of pregnancy, infertility, delayed heat, interrupted lactation resulting in loss of calves, loss in production of meat and milk. In the absence of any treatment for Brucellosis in bovine animals, the disease can be prevented by vaccination.
The vaccination drive in Janpur is part of this larger initiative. The local veterinary department has been working tirelessly to ensure that all livestock in the area are vaccinated. The drive targets diseases like FMD and Brucellosis, which have a significant impact on the productivity of the livestock and the livelihood of the farmers.
The Janpur Cow Vaccination schedule for cattle and buffalo includes vaccines for FMD, Haemorrhagic Septicaemia (HS), Black Quarter (BQ), Brucellosis, Theileriosis, Anthrax, and Rabies. The vaccination for FMD is given at four months and above, with a booster dose one month after the first dose, and subsequent doses every six months.
The success of Janpur Cow Vaccination is crucial for the health of the livestock and the economic well-being of the farmers. It is a step towards healthier livestock, increased productivity, and a more prosperous farming community.
